Zoho Invoice and BillKit are both free to start, but they sit at opposite ends of the spectrum. Zoho Invoice is a full invoicing system: accounts, customers, recurring billing, reminders, payment gateways, a client portal. BillKit is a lightweight, no-account generator that turns a form into a PDF in your browser. Here’s how to decide.
Disclosure: BillKit is our product. Zoho Invoice’s features and plan limits change; this reflects our understanding as of October 2026. Check zoho.com/invoice for current details.

Where Zoho Invoice is the better choice
For many businesses that invoice regularly, Zoho Invoice simply does more for the same price (free):
- Recurring clients: automatic recurring invoices and reminders save hours each month — see recurring invoices and retainers.
- Getting paid online: payment gateways let clients pay from the invoice.
- Tracking: customer balances, payment status and reports across all your invoices.
- Teams: multiple users and roles.
- Time-based billing: track time on projects and invoice it.
- Growth: a path to full accounting in the same ecosystem.
If any of those matter to you, Zoho Invoice is very likely the better fit.
Where BillKit is the better choice
BillKit is the better choice when simplicity and privacy matter more than automation:
- No account, no setup — open the invoice generator and download a PDF in about a minute.
- Occasional invoicing — a full system is overkill for a few invoices a year.
- Privacy — your documents are created in your browser and not uploaded to our servers. Nothing to delete from a cloud account later.
- One-off documents for others — e.g. a rent receipt, a car sale receipt or a quick quote, without registering a business account.
- Quick multilingual or multi-currency documents — 11 interface languages and 150+ currencies, with optional second tax.
The trade-offs in practice
Automation vs. control
Zoho can send invoices, chase them and record payments automatically. With BillKit, you download the PDF and send it yourself — our email templates and reminder templates help — and track payments yourself (BillKit’s local history can mark documents paid/unpaid).
Cloud vs. local
Zoho stores everything in the cloud: accessible anywhere, shareable with an accountant, backed up. BillKit stores history only in your browser: private, but tied to one browser, and lost if you clear browser data. Keep your PDFs.
Free limits
Both are free to start. Zoho’s free plan has usage limits (check current numbers). BillKit’s free tier has no document limit but adds a small “Made with BillKit” footer, offers 3 templates, and shows the 3 most recent documents in history; Pro removes those limits.
Compliance features
Zoho offers country-specific features in some regions. Neither tool should be assumed to handle mandatory e-invoicing everywhere — BillKit produces PDFs only. Where structured e-invoices are required, use a certified solution (what is an e-invoice).
Three common scenarios
An agency billing 15 retainer clients every month. Zoho Invoice is the clear choice: recurring profiles, automatic reminders and online payments remove most of the monthly admin. Doing this manually in a generator would be slow and error-prone.
A consultant sending one or two invoices a quarter. BillKit is quicker: no organisation setup, no customer records to maintain, just the document. Keep a simple spreadsheet of what’s been paid.
A landlord, a babysitter or someone selling a car. These are one-off documents rather than an ongoing billing operation. BillKit’s receipt templates and quote templates open the right generator with sample content, without registering anything.
Moving from one to the other
If you start with BillKit and later adopt Zoho Invoice (or any invoicing system), continue your invoice numbering sequence, enter your open invoices so balances are correct, and keep your earlier PDFs as records. If you leave a cloud system, export your invoices and customer data first.
Frequently asked questions
Is Zoho Invoice really free? It has offered a free plan with usage limits; check Zoho’s site for the current limits and any paid tiers.
Can BillKit send reminders? No. BillKit creates documents only. Use our late payment reminder templates and your own email.
Which is more private? BillKit processes documents in your browser and doesn’t upload them to our servers. Zoho stores data in its cloud, with the usual benefits — access from anywhere, sharing and backup — that come with it.
Verdict
- You invoice regularly, want recurring billing, reminders and online payments → Zoho Invoice.
- You want a quick, private PDF with no account — or receipts and quotes for one-off situations → BillKit.
There’s no conflict in using both: some people keep BillKit for occasional quotes and receipts while running their main billing in a system like Zoho. See our roundup of free invoice generators for other options.
