Tips for your Contractor Payment Receipt

  1. In the US, homeowners and general contractors commonly exchange a lien waiver for each progress payment — reference it on the receipt.
  2. Show total paid to date and balance remaining on every receipt, so both sides track the contract at a glance.
  3. List change orders separately with their approval reference; never fold them into the base price.
  4. Some states limit upfront deposits on home improvement contracts — California, for example, caps the down payment at 10% or $1,000, whichever is less.
  5. Avoid large cash payments; if cash is used, issue a signed receipt immediately.

Frequently asked questions

What is a lien waiver?

A document in which a contractor or supplier gives up lien rights for amounts paid. Conditional waivers take effect when payment clears; unconditional waivers take effect immediately.

What is retainage?

A percentage of each payment held back until the project is complete, to ensure the work is finished properly. Show it on the receipt so both sides agree on the amount withheld.

Should a contractor show their license number?

Many jurisdictions require licensed contractors to show their license number on contracts and certain documents. Including it on receipts is good practice.
