Tips for your Babysitting Receipt

  1. US parents claiming the Child and Dependent Care Credit must report the provider's name, address and taxpayer ID; providers can supply these on Form W-10 rather than printing an SSN on every receipt.
  2. Dependent care FSA claims usually need the dates of care and the amount paid for each period — list them clearly.
  3. Send a monthly receipt for regular care, plus a year-end summary for tax time.
  4. Record overtime, late pick-up fees or meal costs as separate lines so parents can see exactly what they paid for.

Frequently asked questions

Do babysitters need to give receipts?

There is usually no legal requirement for occasional babysitting, but parents often need receipts for tax credits or employer benefits, so providing them is good practice.

Can parents use a babysitting receipt for a dependent care FSA?

Often yes, if it shows the provider, dates of care, child, and amount paid. The plan administrator may also ask for the provider's signature or taxpayer ID.

Should I put my Social Security number on the receipt?

It is safer not to. Provide your taxpayer ID to the parents directly (for example on Form W-10 in the US) and keep it off documents that may be widely shared.
